2024 was the year of stunning, cool lighting. And from that, we’ve all learnt that lighting is one of the most important elements to a room’s look and ambiance. And this goes for your alcoves too.
‘Do not forget about lighting,’ advises Claire Garner, director of Claire Garner Design Studio. ‘You might wish to add warming internal spotlights, picture lights, or backlights to your alcoves. This approach is a great way to highlight these areas and add a cosy atmosphere to your room.’
Lucy at Arighi Bianchi agrees, ‘Lighting is key – wall sconces, spotlights, or even LED strips can enhance the alcove’s ambiance and make it a standout feature in the room.’

‘Consider installing custom shelving for books or display,’ recommends Alex Stubbs, Flitch interior stylist. ‘For display, use open shelving with a mix of books, decorative objects, and plants. Typically, spacing shelves 30 to 45 centimetres apart works well for books and small decor items.’

6. Use as slim hallway storage

When it comes to hallway storage, the advice for most homes is to look at the most narrow furniture possible, as anything else will block the pathway.
