Best Curved Sectional
Rove Concepts Reya Curved Sectional
Pros
Left- or right-facing sectional configurations
Custom order arrives within four weeks
Modular design
Cons
Medium firmness
If a lot of the furniture on Rove Concepts looks familiar, that’s because they’re quite accurate reproductions of very famous midcentury modern originals. While this specific sofa’s shape isn’t borrowed from a 20th century piece, the general look of it feels very 1960s: It’s upholstered in a soft, but unfussy fabric (you wouldn’t see much twill, for instance, in the middle of the last century), it has a soft curve around the back, and a subtly substantial arch in the middle. It’s also done in all very quiet, earthy colors, a hallmark palette of midcentury design. This sofa, however, is made for the 21st century, as it’s contract-grade. One reviewer even went so far as to say, “Beautiful amazing quality couch. Looks exactly like in the photos and the color matches perfectly to what is shown online. Really happy with it, definitely a statement piece.”

Best Curved Sofa Upholstery
Anthropologie Judarn Asymmetrical Serpentine Sofa
Pros
Crafted by hand, so no two pieces are exactly alike
One removable seat cushion
No assembly required
Cons
Not available in other patterns or colors
Bold patterns are rarely something people feel neutral about. In other words, you either love them or hate them. If you fall into the former category, consider adding this cozy curved sofa with a gentle floral velvet and linen fabric to your living space. The one-seat cushion, which is filled with foam and fiber, is removable, making cleaning super easy. The legs are also removable, which may not seem like a plus, but if you’ve ever had to move furniture through a narrow doorway, you can appreciate the benefit of removable legs for an extra few inches of room. One reviewer added, “This sofa in the right room is an absolute statement piece like no other! The quality is excellent.”

How We Selected Our Curved Sofas
As most of the House Beautiful team lives in New York City, where space is limited, we couldn’t test the sofas on our list. That said, we put a lot of research—hours’ worth—into choosing and vouching for the pieces on our list. First and foremost, we chose only the best-looking, luxurious curved couches on the market. Next, we consulted reviews, plucking out the products with the most five-star ratings and positive feedback from verified reviews. Lastly, we wanted to ensure a sizable price range so that everyone, no matter their budget, could find a piece they liked for their space without feeling constricted or restrained by the expense.
Are Curved Sofas in Style?
Yes, curved sofas are still in style more than 80 years after they first became popular. Though they’ve been around for far longer than that, German-American furniture designer Vladimir Kagan is known as the father of the curved sofa after debuting his iconic Serpentine sofa in 1950. These days, an original, vintage Vladimir Kagan is considered a collector’s item and can go for as much as $32,000. Still, his piece inspired so many up-and-coming furniture makers to create similarly curved sofas for a lot less. Curved sofas generally don’t have much going on in terms of ornamentation, but they tend to boast a minimalist style that doesn’t compete with other furniture in the room, which is how this type of sofa has managed to hold onto its timelessness. Lisanin says, “Their graceful curves can transcend fleeting design trends, making them a versatile choice that works well in various interior styles. [You should] select a classic silhouette and high-quality upholstery [to] ensure that your curved couch remains stylish for years.”

What Is the Point of a Curved Sofa?
Curved sofas can’t do anything that traditional ones or sectionals don’t, but they do serve a purpose that surpasses aesthetics. “A curved sofa creates a more cozy and intimate setting for better connection and conversation, as the seating arrangement encourages closeness and intimacy,” Chiu notes. Plus, depending on your piece’s specific curve, it can offer more surface area for sitting and lounging than its traditional counterpart. It can also squeeze into a corner like a small round dining table, without wasting space. Otherwise, because of their unique shape, they also look pretty good floating in the middle of the room. “I personally like curved couches because they can sit closer to the center of the room and away from the walls, creating the illusion of space,” she adds. “The soft curves also have a calming effect on our visual system and our mind, body, and soul.”
Why Trust House Beautiful?
Associate Shopping Editor Jessica Cherner has been covering furniture and home must-haves for nearly eight years. She has written extensively about couches and sofas, from finding the most affordable options to diving deep into topics like what a down-filled sofa is. For this story, Cherner spent hours combing through reviews and ratings to curate a list of the best ones to shop. She also tapped two interior designers for their expert opinions on why curved sofas are a must-have piece in the home.
Mina Lisanin is the founder of her eponymous New York City-based full-service firm. Before starting her firm, she worked as an interior designer at such top firms as Gensler and Unispace. She also graduated from New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology with a degree in interior design. Alice Chiu is the principal designer at her San Francisco-based firm, Miss Alice Designs. Despite her success as an interior designer (she’s decorated more than ten projects across the Bay area), beautifying people’s homes was not her first career. In fact, she has a degree in engineering from UC Davis and worked as an operations manager in Silicon Valley for almost a decade before deciding to get her degree in interior design and architecture from the San Francisco Academy of Art University. In 2012, she opened her firm.
